What we've done.

Lions Brian 'Holy' Williams, Doug Devonport and Harry 'Big H' Brett visit a local library and stock up on books for those who are housebound.

Look for us around the borough in December 2010, along with our sleigh, as we will be making our annual Christmas collections!

Some of our members will be dressed as Santas, Snowmen or even Christmas Fairies?, *shaking* our collecting buckets outside local supermarkets & public places at Christmas time! The Lions club of Castle Point collected almost £2,000 during December 2009, which will go towards good causes in 2010. Thanks to everyone who donated in 2009.

*shaking is just a metaphor - our members know we are not allowed to shake our collecting buckets anymore*

The Story of Chris Yeates (by Lion Brian Stanbridge).

Back in the year of Ha! Ha! Ha! Well, that was the reply I got when I telephoned Lion Bob Scott and asked him when the club built a ramp for a disabled lad called Lawrence Bignall. When he stopped laughing I got an approximate date from him 2003 ¨C 4. The ramp had been designed by Lion Bob, built by members of the club, and paid for by an anonymous donation from a legacy left for the benefit of residents of Castle Point. (This information was the work of Lion Whispering Doug Devonport)

Then Lion Harry Brett got to know about Chris Yeates.

He was shopping in Tescoˇ¯s some months before, when he bumped into a couple he knew from the past. Harry had worked for a Scout Group with Chrisˇ¯s mum Ann, which both their sons had been members.

Like all people who had not met up for some time, Lion Harry asked about Annˇ¯s family and was shocked to hear that their youngest son Chris had been involved in a Road Accident and was now a paraplegic and confined to a wheelchair.

Ann told him the story and the struggle they were having to obtain treatment and get equipment for Chris. Ann & her husband Andrew had founded a Charitable Trust for their son and were trying to raise funds for Chrisˇ¯s needs, the first being a ˇ®walking trainerˇ¯ costing over £4,000.

Lion Harry brought this to the notice of his club, the Lions Club of Castle Point with a view to make it his project for his year as club President. Instead of making a donation, Lion Harry proposed to organise a band event, a benefit night on the September 26th 2009, with all the proceeds going to Chrisˇ¯s charitable trust fund. The club members agreed. Lion Harry contacted several musicians, our club raised £760.00 on the night. (Chris is pictured below)

For more details of the Chris Yeates Charitable trust, go to www.cy-sci.co.uk (registered charity 1128503)

Pictures of the band night & youtube clips are on the band page.

The anonymous donor was told about our efforts (Lion Whispering Doug again.) with the wonderful result, a cheque for £4,000, which was handed to the club for the specific purchase of the exercise machine. A cheque for £4,734 (part of which was raised during September 2009 band night) was given by the Lions Club of Castle Point to Chrisˇ¯s Mum (photo of the presentation is below).

So Chris and his family have now bought a special machine to help him to treat his injury.

Lion Harry was over the moon.

A quote from Lion Harry, "The reaction to the incredible news was the most moving I ever had in my service with Lions, it was the realisation that a group of like minded people can help to change someone's life."
